  • Six Pack Myths

A lot of people aren’t quite sure how often or even how exactly they should be training their Abs. This guide will hopefully clear a few things up. Here are some of the most common misconceptions that people have about training their abs.

MYTH #1: Abs need to be trained every day

Basically, your abs are just like any other muscle, you wouldn’t train your legs or your back every day would you? To properly develop your abs you need to work them hard then allow them to rest and rebuild just like every other muscle in your body. Try not to train them more than once every 2 days to ensure they get proper rest.

MYTH #2: High reps will burn the fat from my stomach

In an ideal world it would but sadly not in the real world. You can’t spot reduce fat – the way to lose fat from around your stomach is to lower your body fat percentage. To get a full chiselled look you need to do some resistance training such as weighted crunches or incline sit ups.

MYTH #3: You can train the upper and lower abs separately

It’s possible to EMPHASISE the different areas of your abs but it’s not as cut and dry as being able to work each section with different exercises. Your abs are all one muscle and for most people the lower and upper abs simply cannot be worked separately.

A very famous quote that still stands true is “A six pack isn’t made in the gym, its made in the kitchen”. Ultimately it’s your diet that will have the biggest effect on how prominent your abs are and by eating healthy nutritious foods you’re heading in the right direction. Foods such as lean meats, vegetables, unrefined carbohydrates and of course healthy sources of protein to help you recover such as whey protein and protein powder.
