Reccomended Daily Allocance for muscle gain
Getting enough protein day to day can be a difficult task. By using protein powder to create protein shakes it makes this task much easier and more manageable meaning you haven’t got to eat endless amounts of food each day.
The best time to consume protein powders is just before or just after your workout, this will give your body the necessary protein it requires to repair the muscle tissue broken down during the workout.
If you are training to build muscle then the general rule is to consume between 1.2 – 1.5 grams of protein per lb. of bodyweight. Example: If you weigh 170 lbs. then you need between 204 and 255 grams per day. Getting this amount from just food will be an immense struggle so we suggest taking protein powder in the morning and then another shake pre or post workout.
Protein powder for weight loss
While it’s not a new concept, only now are non-bodybuilders adopting this strategy of supplementing your weight loss with high protein shakes. If you are only a calorific deficit and doing regular exercise then by all means you should be supplementing your diet with extra protein anyway to help your muscles cope with the extra stress of exercise (no matter how light it may be).
By drinking a protein shake or two each day you will feel noticeably fuller for longer and will no doubt be less likely to snack or have hunger cravings between meals. A good ratio for each meal would be 50% protein 40% clean carbohydrates and 10% fat – try to keep the carbs and fats as healthy as possible e.g. wholemeal pasta and fat from an oily fish such as mackerel.
When should I drink protein shakes
We recommend two shakes per day and one should always be pre or post your workout for best results. The other however, it’s up to you but good practise would be either before bed or first thing in the morning with breakfast. If you opt for a night time shake then you should consume it around 30 minutes before bed and use a type of whey protein powder called casein, this is a slower releasing protein which will work its magic throughout the night providing your body with the nutrients it needs while you sleep.
